Music Video: Another day of editing

As our deadline beckons we are taking significant strides towards completing our video.
Today our object is to complete the last minute of the song.

After several hours we achieved our goal and we have now just got to put our candidate numbers and other important information at the begging of the video.

Music Video: All layers are on and in time :)

After completing all of our filming, today our objective was to put all the footage on the timeline in Final Cut Express. By doing this we can put all the footage in-time with the music which will help us with the editing process.

It will be easy as we can use what we call 'the mountain tip' trick to easily choose between layers.

By pressing this button,

and clicking this button

we are able to alter the importance and visibility of the image. By dragging the black line to the bottom, it removes the image. This also allows us to use interesting fades between sequences.

Music Video: Changes From Original Plain

While shooting our video we decided that we will no longer want to film several minor orginal ideas.
One of these was the car scene.
We felt that this idea would be too hard to film and that we would not be able to fit that scene into our video. Instead we thought we would include some more footage from our band scene as it fitted in more with the genre of the music.

No boys Vs Girls

In our story board, at the end of the video the boys were going to confront the girls, and then they were going to have a mass pillow fight. However, we thought it would be funnier if one of the boys would pretend to be one of the girls. At the end of the video the girls would become aware that a boy was in there mist.

Music Video: Filming the Band Scene

Today we finally managed to secure a time slot in the drama department to film our band scene. We have decided to include a band scene in our music video as it is a reference to the bands actually music talent. It is not widely known that two members of the group can actually play an instrument.

This has concluded our filming and we will now crack on with the editing process

Music Video: Problems !!

Today we were meant to be filming our band scene in our school drama room. However there has been a breakdown in communication which has resulted us not being able to film due to a drama examination.

We will try to film at some stage next week

Music Video: Permission To Use Instruments

Today we were able to gain permission from our music department to use some of their instruments for our music video. To make the band scene more believable we require the use of real instruments. This also complies with the genre of our artist/song as most indie pop video's contain the band playing musical instruments. Unfortunately we were unable to persuade them to allow us to use there drum kit.

Instead of using the drum kit we will use a xylophone. We decided to use this instrument as it would look immature to use such a childish instrument, which corroborates with the style of the band and they fun nature.

Music Video: Permission to Use Drama Facility

In aid of producing out music video, we require a setting for which we can shoot our band shots. Today we were given permission by the drama department to use one of our drama classrooms. This will allow us to be able to film our band scene on Friday.

Music Video: Health And Safety Risk Assessment

Before we went out to start filming there are eight aspects of health and safety which we needed to consider, these are:
  1. No filming in inappropriate locations
  2. Check safety locations e.g. roads
  3. Minimise risk of theft of equipment
  4. laptop-theft-in-action.jpg
  5. When filming on location ensure teacher or responsible adult know where you are and have telephone number and when you will return
  6. Check all equipment is working before you leave
  7. Ensure you have permission for filming if necessary418_418_thumpsup.jpg
  8. Always film with at least one other person
  9. Ensure you have the permission of those you are filming

Planning: Organisation of the Group: Production Schedule Call Sheet: Band Scene

Below is a Production Schedule Call Sheet. It has contains the same information as the Boys Scene one, i.e people needed, props needed, location and time.

As this is another major filming event, I believe that this will help us make the best use of the time available, and again, minimising the amount of human errors which could occur.

Planning: Organisation of the Group: Production Schedule Call Sheet: Boys Scene

Below is a Production Schedule Call Sheet to maintain organisation of our actors, locations, props and costumes. It contains which members of the crew should be at a given location, at a given time. It also contains a list of props which need to be brought to the location. By doing this, it gives us the best possible chance of completing as much filming as we can, and also minimises the chance of props etc being forgotten.

I do intend on creating one of these for each major event.

Planning: Creating our animatic

For the last few days I have been working on completing out animatic or our storyboard.

Planning: Story Board

After our Productive meetings we managed to successfully create our story board for our music video. It mainly consists of shots of the band, and of three boys in a bedroom having a 'boys night' and three girls in a girls bedroom having a 'girls night'. The main theme of the story board is that the girls are harrassing the boys, the boys feel they are a 'Booty Call'.

Planning: Treatment Sheet - Photographs of Possible Locations - Boys Location

After locating the possible locations for the girls room, we have identified a location for the males bedroom.  This location is being considered as it provides a blank canvas to be able to transform the room into a proper 'boys' room. The carpets and curtains are blue which is normally associated with boys, therefore making the location feel more believable.

Planning: Treatment Sheet - Possible props

After examining our props list we have identified some of the items we will need to buy on auction sites such as eBay. I have taken a screenshot of some of the items we have identified as possible props.

The cow boy hats are required for intertextuality. The lyrics mention the film Broke Back Mountain. The film stars two cow boys , who fornicate and we wish to make a visual link to the links by having two of the boys just bholding hands and wearing these cow boy hats.

The blow pipe will be used in a scene were we again intent to visually express the lyrics when they comment on the board game Cluedo.

Instruments
In addition to this we intend to use musical instrument in our video to reflect that the band actuallyhave genuine musical talent, as most of the band can play a musical instrument. We intend to use guitars and drums as they are typical 'band' instruments. Acoustic Guitar

Boxes

We will require multicoloured boxes as we intend to use them during the band scene with the letters BOOTY on each box. WE do not no fully what we intend to do with them yet, all we know is that we will require them.

Planning: Treatment Sheet - Justification Of Idea's in Relation to Genre

We have kept to the music video genre in many ways. One way is the cinematic aspect. We are a series fast editing and bright colours in our music video. This doesn't just relate to the music video genre entirely, but mirrors most indie pop music videos where we drew most of our inspiration from. We are also using lip-syncing, which is a huge aspect of the music video genre, along with a band with instruments and a lead singer. The band scene is also a traditional feature of a indie pop music video. Our music video relates to the artist as it has a very comedic effect. We tried to implement a lot of humour into our video, which is very much what The Midnight Beast like to do.

Planning: Treatment Sheet - Photographs of Possible Location - Girls Room

As part of our preparation, we have been considering possible location for our music video, mainly the girls room. We have identified a possible location for the girls bedroom. This location is being considered as it has the typical 'girl' feel to it which will make the video appear more convincing and more believable. The room is also quite bare, which will allow us to transform it into a teenage girls room with the addition of possible posters.

Here are some photo's of the location.

Planning: Treatment Sheet - What resources will we need?

Today during another productive meeting, we discussed and brainstormed what resources we need in the form of

Props
Actors
Settings

Props

If this image isn't clear, we said we will require
• phones -
• wigs -
• bubbles -
• pipes -
• tape measure -
• cluedo! -
• cowboy hats -
• Pom poms
• cards
• pizza
• brownies
• ps3
• dressing gown
• twister
• car
• guitar and triangle
• pyjama's

The majority of these props we brainstormed were included because they can all be represented and presented in a "fun" light which will comply with our target audience focus group findings. Many of the props such as the wigs, the cluedo!, brownies etc are all being used for some visual representation of the lyrics.

Actors

We will require Three Male Actors to imitate the three male musicians in the band The Midnight Beats. As all three members sing in the song, we will need three different actors in our video to represent each member. In addition to this we may require three females. This is because in the song the members are being harassed by girls calling their phones. We require three females to be these girls.

Settings

We think that in our video we are going to use two locations. The first being a males bedroom. The second being a females bedroom. The driving force between this idea was that to try and capture a fun element into our location. One of the most "funniest" places a young boy could be, would be his bedroom in a 'lads sleepover' environment.

Planning: Organisation of Cast: Cast and Crew Contact Details

After our productive meeting, I thought it would be in the groups best interest to create this table containing Cast and Crew Contact Details. By doing this, every cast and crew member will have each others contact details, which will enable us to maintain good levels of communication with each other. This will assist us with keeping excellent organisation of actors, locations, props and costumes required.

Research: Proposal As To How To Expand The Audience Of The Artist & To Increase Sales

Increasing Sales

After examining our AUDIENCE RESEARCH , to increase the sales of the digipaks and downloads, we will put our music video onto a variation of services. This in turn will broaden the Audience as we will not only be able to target our TARGET AUDIENCE age, but we will be able to appeal to a whole new audience at the same time.We aim to increases the audience of The Midnight Beasts by using certain online video services and Television channels.

Online

Youtube

As our TARGET AUDIENCE RESEARCH indicated that we must target teenagers, Youtube is very popular with the younger generation as it is a fast, easy and convenient way to watch videos as youtube is accessible on almost all phones, so people will be able to view our video online, whenever they want to.

Vevo

Vevo, like youtube, is a popular site with the younger generations. This site is solely dedicated to music video's which may be more beneficial than youtube as on youtube, it holds a wide variety of types of video's. On the iphone app, it has a section dedicated to new video releases and video premiers and exclusives. Our video may be posted in this section, allowing it to be accessed by the millions who use the iPhone App. As this form of technology is very popular with the younger generation , thus making it easier to reach our TARGET AUDIENCE

Television

E4

E4, like Vevo and youtube, is very popular with the younger generation. By sending our video to E4, it will not only allow us to reach our TARGET AUDIENCE but also those of the older generation who are more traditional music video viewers and still rely on such programs on television. By having a variation of media texts promoting our video, it will allow us to have the best opportunity of reaching out to the largest amount of people, broadening our audience.

Research: Audience Research - Wordle

Today i went onto a website called wordle.com

This website how allowed me to illustrate my audience research findings in a simple, yet effect, diagram. This is something which we can refer back to during us creating our music video as it is a summary of the our research. By doing this we can continuously make sure we include the right attributes in our video.

Survey Monkey - Audience Research Results

From our audience research, our main target audience are teenage girls. From there comments, they expect to have a good performance of the actors in the video, they expect the video to be fun & full of energy. Several people commented on having a dance routine, this is an area of which we will need to consider as to how we will incorporate this clearly important element into our video.

From this section, the main answer given was that the video ENTERTAINED them and the video kept the audience ENGAGED. From this we have learnt that to have a successful music video we must make our video interesting and to keep the audience engaged. This can be done by looking directing into the camera as the audience will feel as if the artist is looking and talking to them. I can try to make the video interesting by using various shots, changing between different scenes and by incorporating a series of different editing effects.

The answers for this question are similar to the one above. The main answer was to make the video ENTERTAINING and to have some form of a STORY. This information will be vital when we begin to create our story board as we now can begin thinking about a story which we can focus the video around, while keeping the original message of the song.

From this question, we have gathered how the tempo of the video should be, FAST. We can achieve this by editing between different shots quickly. This will give the illusion of a fast tempo video. This means that we need to have a vast amount of shots and scenes to choose between as we do not want to make the video fell repetitive. Another common view given about the song was that it is COMICAL. This requires us, when we begin our story board, to make sure we have a lot of amusing moments and to make the video feel as fun as possible. This could be done via having silly costumes, props etc.

From this question in particular, it allows us to come to the conclusion that our target audience should be TEENAGERS. The opinion that almost every recipient had was that they would expect the audience  who would viewing this video would be teenagers. This means that we must make the video appropriate for viewers of ages 14-18. This means the video cannot be very explicit, nor to childish. This question is one of the most important of the survey as it has allowed us to target our thoughts and idea's towards a particular age group.
